A Catholic hospital in Colorado has argued in court documents that it is not liable for the deaths of twin 7-month-old fetuses because those fetuses are not people under state law.

So far, courts have sided with the hospital, but that defense contradicts Catholic teaching that human life is sacred from the moment of conception.

The issue of whether a fetus is a person was raised in a lawsuit filed by Jeremy Stodghill, whose 31-year-old wife, Lori, died in 2006 at St. Thomas More Hospital in Canon City, Colo. Lori Stodghill was 7 months pregnant with twins at the time. The suit claims the hospital failed to perform an emergency cesarean section to save the fetuses.

According to published reports, a brief filed by the hospital, owned by Englewood, Colo.-based Catholic Health Initiatives, said that the fetuses are not covered by state’s Wrongful Death Act. “Under Colorado law, a fetus is not a ‘person’ and plaintiff’s claims for wrongful death must therefore be dismissed,” the hospital argued.

The Hypocritical Catholic Church is infamous for speaking with two tongues. everytime you hear from the Catholic Church it’s to advertise changes in it’s own beliefs,teachings,and doctrine. Not all people or institutions calling themselves Christian act like true followers of Jesus Christ. The same holds true for Catholics. When an institution was founded, the people involved probably held to the truths of the mission statement and the words over their door. However, as time goes on, people in chief positions move on and others replace them. Those that replace them may not hold to either the original mission statement or to the sign over the door. In this case, the hospital calls itself Catholic, but it shouldn’t. The people making the decisions are not following Church doctrine. I sincerely apologize to all who see the sign, “Catholic” over the door. This horrible instance is what the Catholic Church calls Scandal for the very reason that it sends the mixed message that Jerry mentions in his comment. It truly is a shame, and i apologize that this is giving such mixed messages. You do need to know that the head of our Church has stated implicitly that these type of scandals must stop. But, he is not a dictator, therefore such things are still happening. In my own diocese (an area overseen by a Bishop), our Bishop has taken away the name of Catholic over the door of a hospital for that very same reason. I hope and pray that those who are of good will may understand the disparity between the name over the door, and the actual Church teachings.

In order to be Catholic, one must be in communion with Christ’s One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church, and thus believe in The Deposit of Faith, ( Catholic Canon 750) including the Sanctity of every Human Life from the moment of conception, and the Sanctity of Marriage and The Family.

They are too people….unborn people who are being denied the most basic right LIFE! given to us by God. We need to step up and protect the unborn because they haveno voice….the men in a women’s life need to stand up and proect tha uborn child too beause men are suppose to be protectors! That child is someone’s sister, brother, cousin, niece, nephew, future aunt, future uncle, grandchild!

The hospital did NOT state that fetuses were not people….they merely cited the state law which said the same

I’d readily bet some non-catholic administrator that tabled this poorly thought out approach . Likely a liberal.
